Course Description

Marking a new chapter in the history of Canon’s EOS, the EOS R mirrorless system is built for imagemakers who demand high-performance capture, a full-frame sensor, and excellent ergonomics. The EOS R was launched in September 2018, and in a few short months, the EOS RP was released bringing the lightest and most compact full-frame Canon digital camera to the market. Then in the summer of 2020, the EOS R5 and EOS R6 were released bringing new technological breakthroughs for creatives. In September 2021, the EOS R3, and in July 2022 Canon introduced the crop sensor EOS R7 and R10. In addition to the new mirrorless cameras, Canon developed 27 native RF lenses which increase the diverse range of Canon’s lenses to over 100 offerings.

In this online workshop, Mike Gurley, recently retired Senior Manager at Canon USA,  provides you the expert guidance to improve your skill set and knowledge with Canon’s new EOS R mirrorless system. We dive into what makes these mirrorless cameras so great for so many photographers and highlight the new advances in RF lens technology.

In four group sessions spread over two weeks, this tech-centric workshop covers a wide range of topics including a thorough review of all the basic user settings and menus for stills and video; customizing the camera to suit your personal needs; and getting creative with picture styles, multiple exposures, HDR mode, and focus bracketing.

Additionally, Mike covers camera 5-axis In Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) and lens Image Stabilization (IS); choosing and using auto-focus lenses in different scenarios, RF mount technology; and using in-camera Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect to smartphones and tablets using the Canon Camera Connect app.

This workshop spans two weeks, so you have time to test out the concepts you learn in class and time to do your homework. Yes, there will be homework! But don’t worry, this homework is fun and designed to help fortify everything you learned during the workshop.

If you’re new to mirrorless technology, a lifelong seasoned pro or someone interested in picking up a camera again after a few years away, Mike welcomes everyone to this workshop.

about
Mike Gurley

Mike Gurley has over 35 years of experience in the imaging industry, from shooting commercial images to being involved in the digital transformation at both Canon USA and Eastman Kodak Company. His experience in the capture to output imaging chain has allowed him insight into the ever changing landscape of imaging, whether it is still or moving images.

Recently retired from his long-time role as Senior Manager at Canon USA, Mike is now able to follow his passion for teaching. Having been involved with the design concepts of cameras throughout his career, his role has been the “photographer advocate” when working with the camera engineers. The camera has to not only be technically superb but be an extension of the photographer’s vision.

Mike’s passion for photography, coupled with work opportunities, has allowed him to work with the demigods of photography, at major media events, workshops, and on location.  Understanding the creative intent of a photographer and teaching them how to use the camera to realize their images, is where the magic happens.
