Expressive Abstract Photography: Exploration in the Digital Darkroom

with Shelley Vandegrift

February 4 – March 4, 2027

Thursdays; 3:00 – 5:30 pm (Mountain Time)
  • Tuition $595.00

Course Description

Every photograph begins with reality. But it doesn’t have to end there.

Some of the most compelling photographic art comes from taking a photograph beyond what was originally in front of the camera. Through the creative process, an image can become something more personal and expressive. In today’s digital darkroom, Photoshop offers a space to experiment and rethink what a photograph can be.

In this online workshop, photographer and educator Shelley Vandegrift explores the creative possibilities of Photoshop through demonstrations, breaking down her techniques and showing you how she works. She guides you beyond conventional post-processing and into a more expressive way of working with photographs. We look at how layers, masks, blend modes, color, motion, distortion, filters, and adjustments can transform a representational photograph into something more interpretive. Custom brushes, overlays, and other reusable elements offer another way to expand the possibilities of the digital darkroom.

Over five sessions, Shelley treats Photoshop as part of the image-making process, moving beyond basic corrections and into a more expressive approach to photography. Each session includes an assignment that puts the techniques into practice, with time in class to review and discuss your images. Shelley works across abstraction, surrealism, and expressive realism, showing how digital tools can change the character of a photograph and give you more freedom to shape an image around your own ideas. The result is a more personal way of working, with Photoshop becoming another part of how you make and see photographs.

What You Should Know:

This workshop is for photographers who are comfortable with the basics of Photoshop and want to use it as a medium for creative expression. It welcomes those taking their first steps into artistic image-making as well as photographers looking to expand an established creative practice.

Participants must have a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, including selections, layers, masks, and adjustment layers.

Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw may be used for basic image preparation, but the focus of the workshop is on using Photoshop as an expressive artistic medium.

Special Notes:

Class will meet 3:00 – 5:30 pm (Mountain Time) on Thursdays starting February 4 and ending March 4 (five online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 14 participants.

Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.

These live online sessions take place in the standard Zoom meeting format. Students can use their microphone and camera, see and hear the instructor and other students, and participate in live discussion and interaction throughout the sessions.

Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less-than-ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

about
Shelley Vandegrift

Shelley Vandegrift’s journey into photography began at age 10, mesmerized by the magic of her father’s darkroom. This early exposure sparked a lifelong passion for blending the creative artistry of capturing images with the technical precision of post-production. The emergence of digital photography provided the perfect medium for Shelley to unite her love of photography with her expertise in computer technology. Today, she channels this synergy into her photographic art and teaching imaging software, artistic post-processing, and infrared photography.

Shelley is known for making complex techniques accessible to all. She has lectured for Skylum and DxO software, earned the 23rd Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Digital Manipulation and Collage, and co-authored Infrared Photography: Digital Techniques for Artistic Images, 2nd Edition.

Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including The Beauty of Invisible Light at the Commons Gallery, as well as in B&W Magazine, A. Smith Gallery, the Latino Cultural Center of Dallas, PhotoPlace Gallery, and the Art Travelers Gallery at Dallas Love Field Airport.

Through her evocative art and empowering teaching, Shelley inspires others to discover the magic of photography and craft their own creative stories.
