Course Description

“Know your gear” is an essential mantra in photography, as understanding your tools is key to realizing your creative vision. This online workshop, led by Nathan Bett, a former Canon Camera Educator and New York Regional Tech Rep, helps you improve your skills with Canon’s EOS R mirrorless system. The class focuses on popular Canon models like the R1, R3, R5, R5 II, R6, R6 II, and R7, while providing insights relevant to the entire EOS R system. Nathan’s expertise guides you through the many features of these cameras and the advances in RF lens technology.

In four group sessions over two weeks, Nathan covers topics such as basic user settings for stills and video, customizing the camera, and getting creative with picture styles, multiple exposures, HDR mode, and focus bracketing. You also explore the camera’s 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS), lens Image Stabilization (IS), autofocus lenses, and using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with the Canon Camera Connect app.

This hands-on workshop is limited to 14 participants, offering personalized guidance for those new to mirrorless technology or returning to photography after a break. Nathan welcomes you to this in-depth look at the camera’s features.

  • Menu: The Q Menu


Session 2:

  • Metering and Exposure
  • Introduction to Auto Focus (AF)
  • Introduction to the Menu System
  • Menus: Shoot, Playback, Functions


Session 3:

  • All About Auto Focus (AF)
  • Menus: Auto Focus, Custom Settings, My Menu


Session 4:

  • All About Image Stabilization (IS)
  • Menu: Wi-Fi and Communication
  • Customizing your experience based on your shooting needs
  • Tips and Tricks

What You Should Know:

This program is designed and intended for current owners of a Canon EOS R system camera or those interested in learning more about this mirrorless camera system. A working knowledge of basic camera operations is required.

The class will focus on popular Canon camera models like the R1, R3, R5, R5 II, R6, R6 II, and R7, while providing information that applies to the entire EOS R system.

Nathan Bett

Nathan Bett is a career artist, photographer, and arts educator. He is a former Canon Camera Educator and New York Regional Tech Rep who helped Canon launch the EOS R System nationally by providing training to camera retailers across the country in the EOS R System. He has worked with Canon since 2016 helping photographers of all skill levels hone their craft and specializes in helping photographers make the transition to mirrorless photography.

Nathan’s work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and festivals worldwide including Aperture Gallery, Devos Art Museum, Ping Yao International Festival of Photography, and Photoville; as well as published in The New York Times. He has provided a wide variety of commercial and educational services for clients including Canon USA, United Photo Industries, Harley Davidson, the Brooklyn Arts Council, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and others. Nathan has taught photography in the City University of New York system at Leman College, and the College of Staten Island. He is currently a Contingent Professor of Photography at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan.

Nathan lives in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula where he is inspired daily by the breathtaking landscapes and deep night skies surrounding Lake Superior. He regularly teaches night sky photography workshops in the area, and when not photographing (or sometimes while!) he enjoys snowboarding, swimming, mountain biking, camping, and mushroom hunting with his family and friends.

Nathan has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Michigan University, and a Master of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design.
