Course Description

Your camera is an extension of your creativity, vision, and voice. Learn to partner with it as a creative tool and companion by understanding the technical aspects of how it works and sees. Whether you are photographing loved ones, landscapes, still life, or using the camera to be present in the moment and capture the varied beauty that surrounds you — developing control and becoming instinctive and intentional with your camera settings and lenses, light and shadow, composition and color allows you to be free and playful in the field.

This online workshop is for the beginner, or someone who wants to review the basics — the foundations of the craft. In the six sessions you develop ease and mastery of your camera and camera functions, lenses and other gear; hone your observation skills and ability to work with light and composition; develop a consistent digital workflow of preparation, photographing, editing, archiving and sharing/printing images; and brainstorm next steps to continue to push and grow your creative photographic expression.

Photography: Back to the Basics is a three-week, interactive online workshop that provides a lively platform to discover new techniques, share inspiration, and review images together. Twice weekly assignments are designed to be both challenging and fun. By the workshop’s end, you have acquired a solid understanding of the technical side of photography, cultivated your creativity, and produced a collection of images that reflect your new expertise.
