The Art of Abstraction in San Miguel

with Stephanie Johnson and André Gallant

October 26 – 30, 2026

  • Package Price $2795.00
  • International Deposit $1500.00

Course Description

Abstraction is an artistic form of creative expression that enables photographers to explore, experiment, and play. Embracing the ideas and concepts of abstract expressionism places the emphasis on the act of creation, i.e., the process, to design all-encompassing imagery that has deeper meaning and conveys layered stories. Various techniques, such as intentional camera movement (ICM), multiple exposure, single-frame abstractions, the use of textures, and creative layering in processing applications, guide photographers to create and build images. The resulting images are less about identifiable subjects and literal interpretations of a location, but are more about the expressive vision of the individual experience.

We invite you to join André Gallant and Stephanie Johnson on location in the colorful and artistic city of San Miguel de Allende for an immersive workshop where you are encouraged and guided to tap into your inner artist. Well-known for their expressive abstract imagery, André and Stephanie share their vast years of experience with abstract techniques and assist you in making your own unique expressive images.

Over the course of the week, you have the opportunity for in-depth and immersive classroom time, morning and afternoon field work excursions, and processing sessions with each of these two instructors, where they share hands-on instruction of techniques, insights into their creative philosophies, and encouragement for you to find your own voice.

Workshop highlights include:

  • Morning and afternoon location-based excursions in and around San Miguel de Allende to practically apply everything you’ve learned from the classroom instruction each day.
  • Two full days of immersion with both André and Stephanie, which breaks down as follows for each instructor: two morning outings/two afternoon outings; two periods of instruction in the classroom; two sessions of processing, group discussion, and Q&A; two image review sessions.
  • A guest speaker presentation from Freeman Patterson for a spark of creative inspiration on the first day of the workshop to kick off an immersive week of exploration and play.
  • Pre-workshop material to help ensure you arrive in San Miguel de Allende with the necessary basic knowledge for accessing your camera’s multiple exposure and creative capabilities.
  • A rich cultural experience in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and as a vibrant hub for the arts.
  • A celebratory group dinner and image presentations on the final evening to share the work you’ve created during the week.

By blending intuition and a spirit of curiosity with the more technical aspects of abstraction, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore new ideas, techniques, and processes, while encouraging you to push beyond boundaries and to cultivate your own artistic voice. This workshop asks you to engage deeply—with your inner self and with others; to question deeply—continually asking “What if?” and to dive passionately into the realm of abstract expressionism.

Additional Information

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

This workshop is for Advanced Amateurs and Professionals who have a basic foundation and knowledge of ICM photography.

Those who have cameras with the onboard Multiple Exposure functions of Additive, Average, Bright, and Dark blend modes will enjoy the best experience and full benefit of this program. There is no specific requirement for participants to have a camera with multiple exposure capabilities, as it is entirely possible to create abstract imagery from single exposures, and there will be opportunities to learn layering processes in Photoshop, as well.

What You Should Know:

This workshop is not a basic ICM workshop. It is a more advanced program, covering advanced camera techniques which require working knowledge of your specific camera’s multiple exposure and creative capabilities. It is incumbent upon each participant to arrive in San Miguel de Allende knowing how to work with their camera for the best experience.

To get the most out of the processing sessions, participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop for use during the workshop, and basic Photoshop skills, or the equivalent in other similar processing software applications, are also helpful.

Special Notes:

Participants should plan to arrive in San Miguel de Allende no later than Sunday evening, October 25. Workshop check-in is first thing Monday morning, followed by breakfast and orientation. The workshop ends on Friday evening, October 30, with a final dinner; travel home should be scheduled for no earlier than Saturday, October 31.

Participants in this workshop may want to consider staying on in San Miguel for the Photographing Día de los Muertos Festivities program starting on Saturday, October 31.

This workshop is limited to 24 total participants. The group will then be divided into two groups of 12 for classroom instruction, outings, and image reviews.

Visit the San Miguel Campus page on our website for details on accommodations, meals, transportation, and more.

Activity Level:
To get the most from your workshop experience, participants should be in good physical (mobility, stamina) and mental health. Come prepared for the high elevation of San Miguel de Allende, long days, and seasonal weather. You must be able to carry your own photographic and personal gear at all times, both on campus and on location. You are responsible for being open and honest about your physical fitness, and we reserve the right to remove you from the workshop if we find your fitness to be less than that which you have described.
Participants should be able to engage in moderate outdoor exercise for up to an hour or more at a time including walking on uneven terrain such as cobblestone walkways and roads, dirt, and loose rock. Location work is likely to include early morning and/or late evening shoots.
Accommodations:

We encourage participants to stay on campus at Hotel Posada de la Aldea for ease of proximity to workshop activities and well-priced rooms. Double accommodations (for couples or friends taking workshops together) are $415 per person for 6 nights (approximately $70 per person, per night), Sunday through Friday, or $830 per person, single accommodations for 6 nights (approximately $140 per night), Sunday through Friday. Additional nights at the hotel can be arranged for participants; please discuss needs with the Administration Office in Santa Fe.

about
Stephanie Johnson

Stephanie is a self-taught photographic artist, with a focus on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), Multiple Exposure (ME), and Creative Photography techniques as a form of artistic expression.  She has a deep passion for creating uniquely distinctive images by working with camera movement, multiple exposure, and a variety of creative processes to reveal the essence of any given scene or subject.  As a creative photographer, she is always seeking to push the boundaries of her own artistry and to evolve her techniques.  As such, in addition to all the ways she uses the camera as a creative tool, she also explores the use of her in-camera ICM and ME images as a basis for creating unique works of art in a post-production workflow.  Stephanie brings an intuitive and instinctual approach to her photography-as-art to visually express light, color, form, line, texture, mood, and emotion through these creative photography techniques.

Stephanie is the Founder, Creator, and Publisher of ICM Photography Magazine (ICMPhotoMag), a first-of-its-kind e-magazine dedicated to celebrating the art and beauty of ICM, Multiple Exposure, and Creative Photography. As an instructor for Santa Fe Workshops she leads ICM and Creative Photography workshops online and on-location for SFW, as well.  She also collaborates with various other online learning communities and camera clubs to share her passion, processes, and knowledge of these creative photography techniques.
