Course Description
Do you wish your color images conveyed more vibrancy, visual interest, and emotion? Or, conversely, do you run from color, only to find your black-and-white images flat, lacking in contrast? For years April Milani has been studying color through art, design, and photography, and she introduces participants to the subject’s many fascinating facets, from science and technique to psychology and emotion.
We take a step back in time and study the masters, discovering what they have to teach us about color harmony and symbolism—information that can be applied to fine-art imagery, commercial photographs that showcase brands, and everything in between. We examine color as light and learn how to find color in the shadows, addressing color grading and why it’s important.
Comprehending color is also crucial for creating subtlety and drama in black-and-white photography, and we explore the role of this tonal range and how it can be used to convey meaning. Each color lesson is presented through videos in Adobe Lightroom, and April shares the skills that take your editing to the next level, including the use of digital tools like sliders.
As you strengthen your understanding of color, you discover not only your own personal palette but how to bring it to life and convey the emotional heart of a visual story.

What You Should Know:
Working knowledge of digital workflow and manual mode on your digital SLR or mirrorless camera. Participants must be able to download and select images using image editing software for class sessions.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.

April Milani’s love of the photographic image began with a Polaroid camera in the kitchen of her grandmother, who told her, “You only get one shot, so make it count.” April studied black-and-white photography in college but temporarily put aside the practice as a young adult, until motherhood inspired her to pick up a camera again. After completing a course at the New York Institute of Photography, she went on to immerse herself thoroughly in the medium. April is a believer in facing one’s fears, and her strong sense of curiosity continues to propel her forward creatively.
