Course Description

Blending camera-based digital imagery with handmade, camera-less prints results in uniquely individual works of art, each crafted with intention beyond a single technique or process. Using ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) and Multiple Exposure ICM (ME ICM) images, then layering and merging them with cyanotype prints made on paper with non-toxic chemicals and UV light unlocks a vast range of artistic possibilities.

Stephanie Johnson, known for her prolific ICM and ME ICM work, is continuously expanding her creative boundaries. One way she does this is by harnessing the sun and UV light to create camera-less prints and blending them with her camera-based ICM and ME ICM imagery. In this five-week online workshop, she shares her techniques for uniting the digital and analog worlds to craft exciting new imagery.

The workshop starts with foundational instruction on creating dry and wet cyanotype prints, an overview of ICM and ME ICM, and Photoshop demonstrations for layering and blending. Stephanie also explores the history of cyanotypes, showcases current artists’ work for inspiration, and offers tips for moving beyond traditional indigo and white cyanotypes.

Each weekly session builds on these techniques, supporting creative exploration through assignments designed for hands-on practice. Students share their progress and discuss their experiences each week. While a basic overview of ICM is included, students are expected to have prior experience, as this is not an introductory ICM or ME ICM course.

Students should be able to digitize their cyanotype prints, either by scanning or photographing them. Blending and layering is done in Adobe Photoshop, though these techniques apply to various post-processing tools.

Stephanie, a passionate advocate for encouraging others to find their creative vision, invites you to explore new possibilities in your art by blending ICM and cyanotypes in this unique, engaging workshop.

Additional Information

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs
What You Should Know:

A basic working foundation and knowledge of ICM photography is required; however, this workshop is not an in-depth ICM course. An overview of ICM techniques is reviewed, but participants should already have experience with ICM, whether that be single exposure or multiple exposure. Prior cyanotype printing experience is not necessary.

Participants also need the ability to digitize their physical cyanotype prints. This can be done using a flatbed scanner or by making high quality photos of their prints with a camera to turn them into digital files.

Basic Photoshop skills, or the equivalent in other similar post-processing software, are also helpful.

A materials list for cyanotype print making will be provided once the workshop is confirmed.

Special Notes:

Class will meet 9:30 am – 12:00 pm (Mountain Time) on Tuesdays starting March 18 and ending April 15 (five online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.

Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.

Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less than ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

about
Stephanie Johnson

Stephanie is a self-taught photographic artist, with a focus on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), Multiple Exposure (ME), and Creative Photography techniques as a form of artistic expression.  She has a deep passion for creating uniquely distinctive images by working with camera movement, multiple exposure, and a variety of creative processes to reveal the essence of any given scene or subject.  As a creative photographer, she is always seeking to push the boundaries of her own artistry and to evolve her techniques.  As such, in addition to all the ways she uses the camera as a creative tool, she also explores the use of her in-camera ICM and ME images as a basis for creating unique works of art in a post-production workflow.  Stephanie brings an intuitive and instinctual approach to her photography-as-art to visually express light, color, form, line, texture, mood, and emotion through these creative photography techniques.

Stephanie is the Founder, Creator, and Publisher of ICM Photography Magazine (ICMPhotoMag), a first-of-its-kind e-magazine dedicated to celebrating the art and beauty of ICM, Multiple Exposure, and Creative Photography. As an instructor for Santa Fe Workshops she leads ICM and Creative Photography workshops online and on-location for SFW, as well.  She also collaborates with various other online learning communities and camera clubs to share her passion, processes, and knowledge of these creative photography techniques.
