Course Description

Experience photography in unexpected ways by integrating artistic principles and exploring expressive techniques such as painterly ICM, the creative application of multiple exposures, and layered textures. By intentionally incorporating elements of art into our image-making process, we aim to foster a dynamic and personal form of expression.

This new online workshop with Renee Lynn spans four weeks and focuses on the five key factors that contribute to impactful image making: creating an emotional connection with the subject, building a solid compositional foundation, utilizing expressive techniques, exploring tools to nurture skills, and discovering your inner artist.

Through instructive presentations, weekly assignments, and constructive image reviews, participants hone their photographic skills to produce expressive images that capture the essence of their inspired vision. With a foundation in visual language, we explore ICM, multiple exposure blend modes, blended layers, or a combination of the techniques. Although ICM and ME will be briefly reviewed, prior knowledge and experience with these techniques are beneficial.

During group discussions we examine the process of constructing an image, highlighting the progression from a traditional photograph to an expressionistic one. The result is images that prioritize inner experience by employing bold colors, exaggerated forms, and rich texture. Armed with these skills one can uncover hidden realms and embrace boundless opportunities for artistic growth.

Creating expressive photographs involves a blend of technical skills, emotional connection with your subject, and imaginative play. Art is a universal language and by integrating its principles, one can transcend technical proficiency to create photographs that resonate on a more profound and expressionistic level.

While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

about
Renee Lynn

Renee Lynn is an American photographer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She completed her studies in commercial photography at U.C. Berkeley and began her career as a photojournalist before she found her passion as a stock photographer specializing in nature and animal imagery. During this time, Renee was represented by Getty Images and Corbis Images. She co-authored the Nature column for Popular Photography and was personally featured in Photo District News and on the Discovery Channel. Her animal imagery was used in advertising by Apple, Exxon, Jaguar, and Discovery Channel and she received the Addy Award for a VW ad campaign. Reaching out to others and supporting their professional development, she founded the NPPA Women in Visual Journalism Conference and Women in Nature Photography Conference.

Living in Santa Fe, a hub of contemporary art, Renee found inspiration to advance her craft within a vibrant community of creative talents. She expanded her work by exploring artistic photographic processes that transcend literal depiction inviting viewers to experience photography in unexpected ways. This approach earned her three category wins in the professional section of the 2024 Julia Margaret Cameron Awards for Abstract, Landscape and Cell phone photography. Additionally, the Florida Museum of Photographic Art recognized her unique landscape work in their annual international exhibition.
