The Chromo Process

Chromo is an experimental silver gelatin process that transforms traditional darkroom paper into luminous photographic objects with remarkable depth, color, and surface presence. Through a series of chemical reactions, silver halides migrates to the surface of the paper, creating reflective hues and shifting tones that change under different lighting conditions. The results are rich, tactile, and impossible to fully reproduce digitally.

In this new online workshop, visual artist Frank Lopez introduces you to the creative possibilities of Chromo and demonstrates how this innovative process expands on the tradition of the chemigram. Through weekly demonstrations, discussions, and image reviews, we explore how different developers, toners, papers, and chemical combinations shape the final image.

Over five sessions, you experiment with handmade and commercial toners, photograms, masking techniques, and a range of silver gelatin papers, learning how each choice influences color, texture, and surface quality. Frank shares formulas, research, and insights from his own practice, encouraging experimentation and discovery at every stage.

Along the way, we look at contemporary experimental darkroom work and discuss key ideas in process-based image making. By the end of the workshop, you have created a body of unique Chromo prints, developed a working understanding of the process, and expanded your approach to experimentation in photographic practice.
