Course Description

Expand the physical possibilities of your cyanotype practice with this five-session workshop with photographic artist Morgan Ford Willingham. Introduced by Sir John Herschel in 1842, shortly after the introduction of the photographic medium, cyanotype is a contact-print process that is known for its deep-blue coloration and rich contrast.

Though paper has been the traditional surface that most beginning cyanotype artists learn with, it is applicable to a variety of substrates that overlap this photographic medium with a variety of disciplines. Over the five Wednesdays of this workshop, Morgan introduces you to the required setup necessary to create cyanotype prints on fabric, using several different surfaces, and considers the expansive nature of what can be done with these fiber-based images.

Morgan writes, “Photography serves as the foundation from which layers of meaning are imbued through the incorporation of symbolic materials and processes. The physical interaction in the creation of each piece provides a ritual outlet and space to meditate on the connection between the artist and the artwork and how each piece embodies a facet of my identity.”

Come and play with Morgan and others interested in handmade alternative images as you explore together and push the boundaries of the alluring cyanotype process.
