Imagine creating one-of-a-kind photographic images using only light, paper, and our own hands. In this new online workshop, Brazilian visual artist and photographer Daura Campos guides us through cameraless photography, transforming everyday materials into expressive visual art.
Drawing on her rich background in bold experimentation, we explore three techniques: phytograms (plant-based contact prints on film), lumen prints (light-exposed photo paper), and chemigrams (chemical manipulations on light-sensitive paper). Using leaves, flowers, and organic materials, phytograms create delicate silhouettes and layered botanical compositions through direct contact with light-sensitive film. In lumen printing, sunlight and time produce atmospheric images filled with soft color shifts, traces, and unexpected tonal variations. Through chemigrams, photographic chemistry, resist materials, and mark-making techniques generate abstract images that balance control with unpredictability.
Across six weekly sessions, we engage in guided demonstrations, lectures, and group image reviews, all designed to help us build a personal creative practice. Along the way, we experiment with texture, chance, composition, and the unpredictable effects of light and chemistry, discovering new ways to approach image-making beyond the camera.
All experiments are designed to be completed at home using a simple list of materials. No darkroom necessary. Through hands-on exercises and creative exploration, we develop confidence working with alternative photographic processes while learning how to transform ordinary objects into striking visual compositions. By the end, we have a final project that reflects our curiosity and experimentation, guided by Daura’s insight and creative vision.
No prior experience with alternative processes is required. Participants need to be technically self-sufficient, as this is not a workshop to learn how to use your editing software. Participants must be able to download, select, and submit images for class each day.
A personal darkroom is not necessary. All techniques taught are home-friendly, and a simple, easy-sourced material list will be provided once the workshop is confirmed.
Class will meet 5:30 – 8:00 pm (Mountain Time) on Mondays and Thursdays starting October 14 and ending November 18 (six online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.
Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.
These live online sessions take place in the standard Zoom meeting format. Students can use their microphone and camera, see and hear the instructor and other students, and participate in live discussion and interaction throughout the sessions.
Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less-than-ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

Recording class sessions using personal devices or third-party tools is not permitted. Session recordings are provided by Santa Fe Workshops and are available to enrolled students for two months after the class. This policy helps protect the intellectual property and privacy of both instructors and students.
Daura Campos is a visual artist and photographer based in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Her artistic practice investigates social issues through experimental photographic techniques, treating analog film as an active, reactive medium to spark dialogue about photography and its role in society. Her work reshapes visual fragments into layered stories, reimagining how images are perceived, understood, and remembered. Daura has exhibited at the CICA Museum (South Korea), MK Gallery (England), Rotterdam Photo (Netherlands), Pinakothek der Moderne (Germany), Museum of Art of Pereira (Colombia), Gallery 44 (Canada), and Open Eye Gallery (England), among others. Her work has been recognized by the IPA – The International Photo Awards with an Official Selection Prize (2024), Analog Sparks Awards with 2nd Place in the Technique category (2024), among others. Graduated in Film and Media from PUC Minas, Daura works as an independent artist and teaches courses and workshops on historical and experimental photographic processes in person and online, in Brazil and abroad.
