Santa Fe Workshops collection of free online events, Creativity Continues, features a special evening with fine-art photographer Mitch Dobrowner in conversation with photo-eye Gallery Director Anne Kelly. They have been friends for over 15 years and their upcoming conversation centers on the evolution of Mitch’s work from its early days to the present. They discuss his influences, the motivation for chasing big storms, and his transition from analog photography to digital.

Mitch’s father gave him an old Argus rangefinder camera when he was a teenager in an attempt to keep him out of trouble. This gift sparked a passion for photography that would last a lifetime. After years of capturing landscapes, he began traveling with storm chasers to photograph weather events, making images of tornados, massive thunderstorms, and monsoons, inspiring awe. This ongoing project began in 2009. His technical expertise, compositional skills, and dedication enable him to produce breathtaking photographs even in extreme weather conditions. Mitch’s black-and-white prints offer viewers a sense of serenity amidst the chaos – expansive high-contrast photographs of severe weather systems and majestic mountain ranges, complete with swirling clouds and sublime light. His work pays homage to past masters, such as Ansel Adams and Minor White, while making his mark in fine-art landscape photography.

Mitch’s photographs have gained significant attention from notable media outlets such as National Geographic, Time, and The New York Times Magazine. Museums that have acquired his work include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Center of Creative Photography in Tucson, The National Gallery of Art, The Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Cleveland Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art in Oregon, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Middlebury Museum of Art in Virginia. His first monograph, Storms, was published by Aperture in 2012. He has also worked with 21st Editions to publish two exquisite limited edition books. Mitch lives with his family in Los Angeles and Lone Pine, California.

Anne Kelly is Gallery Director at photo-eye in Santa Fe, NM, and has been with the company since 2006. As an active supporter of the arts, Anne has a passion for engaging in conversations about art and creativity and is frequently described as enthusiastic, tenacious, and curious. Mitch and Anne end this fascinating presentation with a Q & A session with the webinar audience. Even if you can’t make the live event, a recording of it will be available for all those registered.
