Beginning in the 13th century, the Tewa-speaking Pueblo peoples occupied the site we now know as Santa Fe. They called their homeland Dancing Ground of the Sun. Later, the conquering Spanish called it City of Holy Faith. Officially “founded” in 1610, Santa Fe is the oldest U.S. state capital. Today, The City Different is universally known as a favored travel destination and considered one the world’s great art cites.
Getting to Santa Fe, NM
Santa Fe Workshops is located 60 miles north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque International Sunport is the main airport that serves New Mexico. We suggest you rent a car or use a shuttle service from the airport. Shuttle buses make multiple roundtrips daily. There is also very limited service in and out of the Santa Fe airport through American Airlines and United Airlines. Roadrunner Shuttle operates private car service out of the Santa Fe airport (505) 424-3367.

Our Summer Campus in 2024
Our campus, nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, offers a quiet retreat from the bustle of Santa Fe, yet it is only 10 minutes from the downtown Plaza. Beautiful adobe walls, flower gardens, and shaded courtyards provide inspirational backdrops for image making. Comfortable classrooms foster an environment for sharing ideas, words, and images. Our store, digital lab, and operations offices complete the framework that supports the workshop experience.
Santa Fe is located at 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The air is dry (usually about 15-25% humidity) and the sun is strong, so remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, and chapstick. If you feel out of breath or sluggish, it’s probably the altitude. Drink plenty of water; alcohol and caffeine are dehydrating. Dehydration may also cause headaches so, again, lots of water, try ibuprofen, and pace yourself.
Our upcoming summer workshop season will be unlike any other. Our base of operations will be in the vibrant Railyard Art’s District at the New Mexico School for the Arts. While our campus of 33 years is being renovated, we are excited to be on their campus in the heart of Santa Fe’s arts scene. The possibilities and opportunities of a new location in town and the modern facilities at NMSA are endless.
Once the city’s old shipping depot, the Railyard Arts District is now Santa Fe’s cultural centerpiece. After a 35-year redevelopment project, the 50 acres of the old railyard is now home to an electric mix of artist studios, galleries, museums, and arts organizations including SITE Santa Fe, El Museo Cultural, and the newly opened New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary. This energized neighborhood includes the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market, International Folk Art Market, the 40-acre Railyard Park, and Santa Fe Depot—the northern terminus of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter line. It is also home to a wide variety of hotels, restaurants, shops, brewpubs, a movie theater, and is a popular spot for community gatherings, concerts, and seasonal cultural events. This summer we are thrilled to be right in the middle of Santa Fe’s colorful Railyard Arts District.

The Digital Lab
The Digital Lab at The Workshops has 13 workstations complete with 1 TB Apple Mac Mini M1 Chip computers, top-of-the-line monitors courtesy of NEC, and the latest software from Adobe. Epson provides us with Epson P900 printers and a wide selection of Epson papers we have available for printmaking workshops.
To enhance your learning experience in our multimedia workshops, we have H4n recorders and wireless lavalier microphone kits.

Meals
For Summer 2024, lunch Monday through Friday and a group dinner on Friday are included.
At present, off-season Santa Fe-based workshops do not include meals. This provides the opportunity to venture out on your own with fellow participants and staff to share the culinary delights of Santa Fe.
