Chromo is an experimental silver gelatin process that transforms traditional darkroom paper into luminous photographic objects with remarkable depth, color, and surface presence. Through a series of chemical reactions, silver halides migrates to the surface of the paper, creating reflective hues and shifting tones that change under different lighting conditions. The results are rich, tactile, and impossible to fully reproduce digitally.
In this new online workshop, visual artist Frank Lopez introduces you to the creative possibilities of Chromo and demonstrates how this innovative process expands on the tradition of the chemigram. Through weekly demonstrations, discussions, and image reviews, we explore how different developers, toners, papers, and chemical combinations shape the final image.
Over five sessions, you experiment with handmade and commercial toners, photograms, masking techniques, and a range of silver gelatin papers, learning how each choice influences color, texture, and surface quality. Frank shares formulas, research, and insights from his own practice, encouraging experimentation and discovery at every stage.
Along the way, we look at contemporary experimental darkroom work and discuss key ideas in process-based image making. By the end of the workshop, you have created a body of unique Chromo prints, developed a working understanding of the process, and expanded your approach to experimentation in photographic practice.
No traditional darkroom is required. A darkened room with red LED lighting is sufficient. Previous darkroom experience is helpful but not required.
You should be able to download and select images using basic image editing software for class sessions. Photographing your work with an iPhone is also fine for image review.
A materials list will be provided once the class is confirmed as a “go.”
Class will meet 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (Mountain Time) on Saturdays starting November 7 and ending December 12 (six online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.
Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.
These live online sessions take place in the standard Zoom meeting format. Students can use their microphone and camera, see and hear the instructor and other students, and participate in live discussion and interaction throughout the sessions.
Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less-than-ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.
