Course Description
Spending time in a new place, immersed in your creative work and surrounded by artists from around the world, opens the door to new perspectives and possibilities. Artist residencies create space for that kind of growth, offering time for reflection, focus, and connection away from the routines of daily life.
This three-hour online seminar, led by photographer Ella Morton, explores the wide range of artist residencies available to photographers and photo-based artists. Ella shares how to evaluate whether a residency aligns with your creative goals, covering key factors like location, studio access, cost, and opportunities for collaboration.
Ella also offers insights from residencies she has attended, highlighting the unique benefits each one provides. Throughout the seminar, you learn about online resources, review effective application strategies, and break down essential logistics such as travel, timing, and funding. The session wraps up with a Q&A, offering a chance for tailored advice and questions.
Residencies create opportunities for new work, fresh perspectives, and creative connections. Whether you’re just beginning to explore the idea or already eyeing a program, this seminar offers practical insight and guidance to help you take the next step.

The workshop is open to all who have an interest in learning about photography residencies. No level of photographic technical ability is required since this is not a workshop to make new images.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.

Ella Morton is a Canadian visual artist and filmmaker based in Toronto. Her expedition-based practice takes her to remote landscapes across Canada, Scandinavia, Latin America, Greenland, and Antarctica. Working primarily with experimental analogue processes, she captures the fragile beauty of these environments.
Ella holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design (New York) and an MFA from York University (Toronto). Her work has been exhibited internationally, with screenings at major film festivals like the Vancouver International Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2021, her project The Dissolving Landscape won the Environmental Award at Review Santa Fe. Her work has been featured in publications such as NPR Picture Show, Lenscratch, Analog Forever Magazine, and the British Journal of Photography. Ella’s practice is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and the National Film Board of Canada.
