Course Description

Do you aspire to create an emotionally compelling series of images that tell a cohesive story about a particular place and time? This four-week online workshop equips novices and pros alike with the skills and confidence to generate effective travel/documentary images and present them in the form of a well-defined, artful photo essay.

Each session begins with a lecture by award-winning photographer Mark Edward Harris, who offers tools, techniques, and inspiration. He covers topics including camera technique, story development, on-location lighting, and marrying photographs with the written word, as well as digital workflow strategies and real-world tips for navigating the photography market.

Participants are encouraged to bring to the first class 10 favorite travel-related images from their existing portfolio, saved as JPEGS (2,000 pixels on the long side). Then, from the second session onward, they present their developing travel photo essays, receiving valuable feedback that can be incorporated into their projects while they put theory into practice.

As Mark shares the preparation, concepts, and techniques necessary to create professional-looking travel photo essays, you discover how to make—and curate—inspirational images that far transcend the simple “I was there” photograph.
