Course Description

Few cities in the world feel as cinematic, mysterious, and visually layered as Venice. Rising from the water on more than a hundred small islands, this floating city unfolds through narrow alleyways, quiet canals, hidden courtyards, and weathered facades that glow with changing light. Renaissance palaces, Gothic churches, and centuries-old stone bridges create an atmosphere where history feels present at every turn. From the quiet canals of Cannaregio to the sweeping views along the Grand Canal, the city reveals itself slowly through layers of architecture, water, and light. For centuries, Venice has inspired writers, painters, and photographers alike offering a place where beauty, fragility, and time exist together in a uniquely poetic balance.

In Venice: Photography and the Poetry of Place, photographer, educator, and author of Lost Venice, Sarah Hadley invites you to experience the city beyond its famous landmarks. Having photographed Venice over many years, Sarah brings a deep personal connection to the city and a sensitivity to its quieter rhythms. With her guidance, you explore both iconic locations and lesser-known neighborhoods, from the historic trading district around Rialto to the artistic atmosphere of Dorsoduro to discovering how Venice’s shifting light, layered textures, and atmosphere can shape your own creative voice.

Each day blends photographic exploration with time to review your images, discuss them, and engage in group feedback. Mornings begin with coffee and conversation before heading into the city for guided walks through visually rich locations chosen for their storytelling potential, including places such as Ca’ d’Oro and the remarkable spiral staircase of Scala Contarini del Bovolo. The workshop encourages a slower pace, allowing you to observe carefully, follow intuition, and respond to the emotional character of the place. Alongside group outings, there is also time for independent exploration so you can pursue subjects that resonate personally.

Throughout the week, Sarah works closely with each participant through individual feedback sessions and supportive group critiques designed to deepen your understanding of your own image-making process. Conversations move beyond technical considerations to explore how photographs can convey atmosphere, memory, narrative, and personal perspective. Gatherings offer space to review images, refine editing choices, and develop a more cohesive visual approach, with opportunities to photograph Venice after dark near the Teatro La Fenice or along the illuminated canals.

Venice itself becomes both subject and collaborator. From the quiet reflections of early morning near Piazza San Marco to the worn textures of marble steps along the water, from the residential island of Giudecca and the views from San Giorgio Maggiore to the artistic legacy of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the contemporary energy of the Venice Biennale gardens, the city offers endless opportunities for meaningful image-making.

You leave the workshop with more than a portfolio of photographs. You carry a deeper connection to Venice, a clearer sense of your personal photographic voice, and the shared experience of exploring one of the world’s most visually extraordinary cities alongside a small community of fellow photographers.
