Course Description

Santa Fe is our muse and Northern New Mexico is our playground in this in-person class. This landscape photography workshop with Jean ‘Gino’ Miele is about seeing beyond the surface of things and connecting the world we can see with the invisible world in our hearts. It’s about making the leap from taking pictures of what’s “out there” to creating images that come from “in here”… that express the way we feel about our lives and about the hidden spirit—the genius loci—of the landscape.

The long summer days and dramatic monsoon season skies make for great photographic opportunities. Together, we explore the backroads, high points, and hidden gems that inspired so many artists to make this magical part of the world their home.

This workshop is grownup playtime for photographers. Think of it as a week of photo camp in Santa Fe! We make new friends, new pictures, and work on whatever the next step is for each of us, technically and aesthetically. Daily classroom time includes reviews of assignment images, lively group discussions, and Lightroom post-processing techniques specific to landscape photography. Together we focus on understanding the magic necessary to transform what’s in front of the camera into a stunning photograph and learn how to create stronger, more striking landscape images.

To further enrich our experience, in addition to field trips into the high desert, Gino introduces the class to local photographic luminaries, who share their own take on the photographic landscape. He also brings you to his favorite locations, helps you figure out what’s missing from your pictures, and teaches you the image-making and Lightroom techniques you need to take your work to the next level.

Bring your own laptop with the latest version of Lightroom Classic, and join us for this special workshop! Develop the skills and insights to make photographs that reflect your inner vision as clearly as the landscape. Learn something new—about photography, and about yourself.

about
Jean Miele

Jean “Gino” Miele’s photographs explore the borderlands between fiction and reality, and reflect his lifelong interest in perception, spirituality, and mysticism. His images remind us that moments of perfection are possible, and that we create our own reality. He believes every photograph is an act of transformation, and that the photographs we make tell us more about ourselves than about what was in front of the lens.

Gino’s photographs have appeared in thousands of publications. His artwork has been exhibited internationally and acquired by collectors worldwide. Gino has taught at Santa Fe Workshops since 2003. His primary goals are to demystify digital technique and empower students to realize their own photographic vision.
