Course Description
Imagine someone walking into the room where you are right now, glancing quickly around, and describing the scene by saying that there is a person looking at their computer—you.
The ant on the floor, however, sees a giant landscape of towering shapes. A person who gained sight for the first time sees a two-dimensional world devoid of depth. Picasso sees you from different angles, all coming together as one. A long lens sees one thing outlined in sharp clarity, surrounded by an out-of-focus wash of colors.
For the last 30 years Eddie Soloway’s workshop “A Natural Eye” has offered a fresh perspective on landscapes, and now he’s launching new ideas for photographers, writers, and visual artists that catapult your vision and enthusiasm into new dimensions.
Our home base for this creative week is spectacular Mid-coast Maine, a stone’s throw from wild beaches, northern hardwood forests, and quaint New England villages. There we explore creative strategies for expanding our ways of seeing—from ideas right under your nose to insights delivered by encounters with unfamiliar visionaries, cultures, and species. We examine how artists have used their unique visions to bring completed bodies of work into the world, while challenging ourselves to experiment with innovative ideas on our own.
As we immerse ourselves in a Maine summer landscape and explore myriad ways of seeing the world afresh, you discover how “I had no idea!” becomes “That is so cool!”
The gracious and spacious Sebasco Harbor Resort provides a comfortable and inspiring setting for our time together. Only one hour north from Portland’s Jetport, Sebasco offers breathtaking ocean views on 550 acres. We enjoy all the resort has to offer including newly renovated accommodations, a waterside restaurant, a comfortable classroom, and perfect access to coastal natural areas.
In addition to Eddie’s familiarity with Maine, Santa Fe Workshops Founder and Director, Reid Callanan, has a long history with this part of Maine and adds his local knowledge to the week. Reid also invites the group to his family’s home overlooking Popham Beach for dinner one evening.

What You Should Know:
This workshop is open to photographers, writers, and visual artists. After each session, participants are asked to interpret a new idea through their chosen medium. Photographers need to come with the digital skills to download, select, and upload their images.
