Course Description

Natalie Goldberg and Eddie Soloway embrace the creative journey with a similar spirit. Natalie’s books have sold millions of copies in multiple languages, have inspired thousands of writers, and connected us deeply to her stories about the gift of every moment. Wonder and joy best characterize Eddie’s photographs and his decades of commitment to teaching. His photographs have been called a love song to the natural world. While Natalie and Eddie both live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a chance meeting far from home led to a regular exchange of stories, and photographs of beauty.

Santa Fe Workshops is excited to bring together these two friends, and for our first time, a photographer and a writer. In three presentations, spread over three days, Natalie and Eddie explore the intersection of the two universal languages – images and words. Together they unfold and reveal the truths they have discovered using images and words that define their creative careers.

Day One – Three Simple Lines and The Essence of Place

Natalie’s newest book, Three Simple Lines, will have been released just weeks before this Perspectives seminar. Natalie will share her early stories studying with Allen Ginsburg, her pilgrimage to Japan to learn more about her haiku heroes, and a selection of her favorite haiku. Haiku has the ability to surround a moment or a place simply, elegantly, and profoundly. A sense of place is also at the core of Eddie’s photographs. The quest to convey essence becomes enriching because it demands whole-hearted attention. And joyfully, there are endless ways to convey your own personal interpretation of a moment, of a place, of an idea. Put another way, how do you get what you see, think, and feel in the press of a shutter?

Day Two – Filling the Well: Where Do Ideas Come From?

The journey of expression starts by turning off the chatter. Natalie will share insights into the power of letting go, of quieting the mind, and hence, creating space for receiving. In today’s seminar Eddie will look at photographs that were inspired by the words of a writer, the palate of a painter, the story of a sculptor, and most importantly, the eyes of a child.

Day Three – The True Secret of Writing & the Art of Seeing

Everything happens so quickly. We are hellbent on creating something to post, only to scroll past it with the swipe of a finger. Seeing comes from another place. An opposite space. It doesn’t mean you always have to sit quietly, though that is a great place to begin, regularly. Seeing can happen when you are charged with energy, alive and vital, completely connected to the moment. Natalie and Eddie share their most important stories about what they have learned in search of The Ways of Writing and Photography.

Join Natalie and Eddie on a free spirited and enjoyable journey of discovery that changes the way you write and photograph.
