Course Description

The field of therapeutic photography exists at the intersection of psychology and conceptual contemporary image-making. Judy Weiser, one of the practice’s pioneers, defines it as self-directed, photo-based activities that can be undertaken individually or in a group setting, without the need for a formal counselor or therapist.

Over the course of five sessions, Lilit Danielyan introduces participants of all skill levels to therapeutic photography. We engage in self-portraiture and reenactment photography, immersing ourselves in personal narrative and enhancing our self-reflection and creativity. Through journaling, we dive deep into inquiry, and we draw on our individual archives to access history and memory—all while investigating the role of photography in social and community contexts.

As we learn how to employ our technical and aesthetic skills in service of greater mindfulness, we explore the evolution of therapeutic photography itself, from its 19th-century origins with Dr. Thomas Kirkbride through to Weiser. Lectures chart the field’s theoretical foundations and practical applications, while group critiques foster a supportive environment for feedback and growth. Our time together culminates in a presentation and celebration of final work.

There are countless photography and lens-based practices that can serve as powerfully enriching tools for growth, awareness, and connection with the world around us. Come discover a selection of them in this thorough—and thoroughly intriguing—workshop.
