Course Description

NOTE: online registration for this presentation ends at 6:00 p.m. (MST) Monday, December 14.

This three-day, lecture-format presentation offers a unique opportunity to connect more deeply with your photographic voice with Joyce Tenneson as she shares 50 years’ worth of photographic experiences. Joyce has created new presentations for this experience that highlight each decade of her career, her personal life, and her exhibition openings in several countries. She also unveils for the first time, images from her new book, Radiant Beings: The Magical Essence of Flowers, to be published in 2021.

Joyce loves to empower others with new skills, helping them build confidence in their own talents while giving them a road map to move forward on their own path as artists and photographers. These presentations inspire you to refresh your inner creativity and envision new photographic projects that bring meaning to your life. Set the tone for the upcoming year by taking this exciting and enjoyable journey of discovery.

Day One: Getting Unstuck: Bringing the Magic Back Into Your Photography

Many photographers want to reinvigorate their work with spontaneity and passion. To that end, Joyce helps you look more deeply at your photographic voice by opening up to the beauty around us that we often take for granted. In today’s presentation, she charts her own creative journey, showing how she stayed connected with her authentic voice throughout her career. Critics have credited Joyce’s work with going beyond a surface recording of a subject to show the inner spirit hovering behind the facade. “I want to allow others to reveal and celebrate aspects of themselves that are usually hidden,” she says. “My camera is a witness. It holds a light up for my subjects to help them feel their own essence and gives them the courage to collaborate in the recording of these revelations.”

Day Two: Connecting with Photography Projects That Have Personal Meaning for You

What do you love? What holds great conviction for you? What do you dream about doing when you have enough time? Consider these questions before the program begins and write down a short list of subjects and ideas that interest you—Joyce takes care of the rest! She has published 16 books, each of which began as a personal passion project, and though her teaching she has acted as midwife of sorts, helping others bring their photographic dreams into reality. She outlines the steps necessary to create a timeline for a successful book or exhibition project, so you feel empowered to move forward. We also look at former participants’ projects, completed after just a week in Joyce’s book workshop.

Day Three: Connecting with Nature

Like many of you, Joyce is passionate about photographing nature. But how do we zero in on something we may already be doing and amplify it? What are the factors that ignite inspiration for an exciting photo project? Joyce is fascinated by the cycle of life, and her book Trees and the Alchemy of Light delves deeply into that subject by showing the complex life journey of trees, which is remarkably similar to that of humans. As Joyce talks about how she accomplished this and other projects, you are given a road map for successful completion of your own projects. She also discusses different types of printing processes, so you can envision the right fit for your subject matter, and Joyce takes time reveal ways your project can best reflect your personal vision.

Join Joyce Tenneson on a practical as well as a spiritual journey that will change the way you see your creative world and your photographic projects.

A 10 to 15 minute Question and Answer session follows each daily presentation. Questions from the participants will be reviewed and a few selected during this informal wrap-up conversation.
