Course Description

Give yourself a treat—three rich photographic experiences—to honor your creative self and the natural world surrounding you. Bring back the joy and wonder of being in nature and holding a camera in your hand. Learn how to make pictures that soar past postcards, to capture what you are feeling, what you are seeing, and what you are thinking. Eddie Soloway’s creative spirit is inspired by the natural world, and it’s a place he practices his “eyes wide open” philosophy of making images.

Over three evenings at the start of summer, Eddie takes you on an unforgettable journey of discovery and inspiration. He makes you laugh when he shares the story of his first gallery show, and you will “get it” when he clearly shows what he didn’t understand in his early years. Looking at the work of world-class photographers, he kept asking, “How come mine don’t look like that?” Digging back into his mistakes—his “good ones” at the time—he lays out simple ideas to understand light, avoid chaos, create beautiful backgrounds, lead the eye with thoughtful compositions, and understand that if there is magic, work it, hang out, and slow down.

Eddie’s sessions honor the classic landscape, offering you ideas to make it fresh and your own, and he whole-heartedly dives into the interpretive landscape, celebrating the mindset of breaking out of your box, and making new photographs. The sessions swim in the creative, but honor the thoughtful. Get ready for ideas to set you free, to shake you out of ruts, and charge you up to make new photographs, right now.

The first session on Tuesday evening wraps-up with a creative photographic challenge/assignment, and you are invited to participate. At the end of the third session on Thursday evening, Eddie showcases the results of this (optional) assignment with a full group slide show, after which Eddie will selects ten images to comment on.

The programs are presented on Santa Fe Workshops facilitated Zoom webinar platform. The final 10 minutes of each evening is reserved for a Q & A session.

Prerequisites:  None! Ok, anyone that loves the natural world, and would like to learn some great ideas for seeing its magic and remembering it with your camera and in your heart.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.

Eddie Soloway is a photographer, teacher, and storyteller committed to opening our eyes to the natural world. He has taught photography and creativity for leading photographic institutions and schools around the world. He is the founder of Taproot, an online creative gathering. As an educator, Eddie has received the Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award from CENTER and been named one of America’s best photography workshop teachers by Photo District News.

Eddie is the author of the book, One Thousand Moons, the SEE THINK DO photo cards, and the Expressive Landscape video series.
