Course Description

Expand your creative possibilities by melding the captivating worlds of photography with fine art painting. Two processes are presented in this workshop: using hot wax plus pigments with traditional encaustic techniques and painting with cold wax medium with oil paints for a heat-free alternative.

Each process begins with digital images printed onto a variety of materials including inkjet and handmade papers, oil painting paper and cotton fabric—all printed during class. Participants enhance the images with a variety of creative options including layering additional mixed media materials, adding textures, mark making, and applying color.

The hot encaustic process and the creative application of cold wax medium are rarely taught within the same workshop. For safety, the processes are presented on distinct days to allow for different studio precautions. Learn which methods give your photography the artistic look and feel you desire.

Over five days, Jill introduces you to an expansive spectrum of possibilities for enhancing photographic images with painterly techniques and mixed media—all offer unique contributions to an artist’s vision. We also spend time making new photographs of the Santa Fe area and developing workflow strategies tailored to each participant’s needs.

Join Jill and discover new avenues of artistic expression as you combine photography with the seductive medium of hot and cold wax.
