Course Description

Adobe Photoshop is indispensable to graphic designers, 3D modelers, and illustrators. But did you know that many of the program’s features were specifically created with fine-art photographers in mind? Spend two days with Dan Burkholder as he demonstrates the ins and outs of this ingenious digital tool, uniquely suited to infuse your photographic images with an extra dose of intrigue and beauty.

Dan demystifies color management with a simple, no-geek-talk approach that makes your editing and printing processes more predictable than ever. He explains the new masking techniques and helps you master the power of Photoshop Smart Objects once and for all. (Hint: it’s not that hard!) Finally, you discover how to customize your workspace for your images, your mind, and your hands, resulting in a speedier workflow and more information at your fingertips.

Dan is known for his rock-solid photography instruction, delivered with humor and high energy. His decades of experience in both the classic darkroom and the digital arena allow him to answers your questions in ways that are easy to comprehend and—just as importantly—remember. With his assistance, you gain a clear understanding of how to navigate Adobe Photoshop and the confidence that comes from knowing that its many powerful components are at your command.

Dan Burkholder

Dan Burkholder has a long history of looking beyond the photographic horizon to see, explore, teach, and exhibit the next great thing in imaging. His poignant monograph, The Color of Loss (University of Texas Press, 2008), intimately documented the flooded interiors of post-Katrina New Orleans and is the first coffee-table book shot entirely using HDR (high dynamic range) methods. Dan’s award-winning book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing, has become a standard resource in the fine-art photography community.

Dan earned his B.A. and master’s degrees in photography from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. His platinum/palladium and inkjet prints are included in private and public collections internationally.
