Course Description

If there is one thing that we know to be true, it’s that the art and science of photography continues to evolve. Whether you are combining multiple images in Photoshop to overcome obstacles that cannot be solved in capture, or creating multi-image photo-realistic montages, the tools and techniques needed to create a successful image are the same. In this unique three-part series, join Julieanne Kost as she walks through her creative process from ideation to completion. She shares insights into her workflow including her sources for inspiration, approach while capturing photos, and techniques used in post processing in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.

In the first session, Julieanne discusses the easiest way to create photo-realistic composites by revealing techniques to previsualize the final image while on location. She demonstrates how to increase your productivity (and decrease your frustration) by capturing all of the necessary components with the same quality and direction of light, and how to seamlessly combine them in Photoshop.

Julieanne reveals the inspiration and techniques behind her powerful surreal composites in the second session. She shares how she selects a primary subject, builds the environment, and adds supporting elements to reinforce the visual narrative. Julieanne shares best practices for a completely nondestructive workflow and shows how color, tone, and texture can help unify even the most surreal of scenes.

In the final session, Julieanne examines several multi-image merging techniques to increase the quality and resolution of a photograph. Then, she reviews a recent self-assignment that combined multiple images to explore the psychology of color. And finally sharing an ongoing project of compressing images taken over time into a single moment, showing how the simple act of sequencing images can create new relationships and meaning between images.

A 10 to 15 minute Question and Answer session follows each daily presentation. Questions from the participants will be reviewed and a few selected during this informal wrap-up conversation.

Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less than ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops. If the video quality for a particular online experience is not up to our standards, we will work to post a higher-quality recording, online, for your review shortly after the live event concludes.

Policies:

View Withdrawal and Transfer Policies for online programs.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for two weeks after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after two weeks to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.
