The first light of day falls across rice fields, monks move quietly through temple courtyards, boats travel along Bangkok’s waterways, and artisans transform simple materials into objects of beauty. These moments are at the heart of photographing Thailand, where daily life and cultural heritage remain closely connected to the landscapes and communities that surround them. This 12-day photographic journey with photographer and educator Krista Rossow moves from Bangkok into northern Thailand, exploring the many layers of the country through close observation and meaningful encounters along the way.
The journey begins in Bangkok, a city where rivers, markets, temples, and neighborhoods create a constantly changing visual rhythm. We explore the Chao Phraya River by boat, photograph the historic Wat Pho temple complex, experience evening chanting with monks, and spend time at Khlong Toei Market, one of Bangkok’s most vibrant and active markets. A day with a local Bangkok photographer takes us beyond the well-known landmarks and into quieter neighborhoods, where we photograph the daily rhythms and overlooked spaces that shape the city.
From Bangkok, we travel north to Nan and Pua, where mountains rise above rice fields and rural life follows a different pace. In this region, photography becomes a way to better understand the connection between people and the land around them. We photograph farmers beginning their day, visit a Tai Lue weaving community to learn about generations-old textile practices, and explore the Bo Kluea salt wells, where an ancient method of salt production continues today. Sunrise in Doi Phu Kha National Park offers opportunities to photograph mist-covered valleys and shifting light, while a visit with the Mlabri community provides insight into an Indigenous culture with a deep relationship to the forest.
Continuing to Phrae, we discover a historic town shaped by the teak trade, where the influence of that era can still be seen throughout its streets and architecture. We photograph the old town, visit Khum Chao Luang teak mansion, and spend time with local craftspeople preserving traditional methods of woodworking, natural indigo dyeing, weaving, and bamboo basket making. These encounters offer a closer look at the makers themselves and the knowledge passed down through generations.
The final portion of the trip brings us to Chiang Dao and Chiang Mai, where mountain landscapes and cultural traditions create a different rhythm of exploration. Beneath the limestone peaks of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, we photograph coffee farms, meet local growers, explore the atmospheric Chiang Dao Caves, and learn more about Buddhist practices and temple life. In Chiang Mai, we spend time exploring the city after dark, from its lively markets to the streets and neighborhoods that give it its character, before gathering for our final evening together.
Throughout the journey, Krista encourages you to look beyond the obvious and develop a more thoughtful approach to photographing Thailand. Drawing from her experience behind the camera and in the editing process, Krista guides you in making thoughtful photographs while creating space for conversation and creative growth. Together, these experiences offer a closer connection to Thailand and the stories that continue to unfold within it.
