The best camera is the one you have with you, and most of the time, that’s your phone. In this new online program, photographer and filmmaker Aundre Larrow shares his approach to creating compelling portraits using an Apple iPhone.
Whether you are new to photography or already experienced behind the camera, over two Wednesday evening sessions, you explore ways to make the most of the tools already in your pocket, helping you create polished, expressive images with greater clarity, confidence, and creative intention.
Aundre walks through essential camera settings, features, and apps that expand what is possible with iPhone photography. He demonstrates practical approaches to light, composition, color, and framing, along with techniques for directing subjects and capturing authentic moments. The focus is not only on making sharp images, but on creating portraits that feel thoughtful, dynamic, and alive.
The program also introduces mobile editing apps and simple workflows that take an image from capture to final share. Throughout the sessions, Aundre shares insights from his widely recognized #shotoniphone projects, including films like Float and Mud, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how he approaches storytelling and portraiture with a mobile device.
Both sessions are primarily lecture and demonstration-based. Between these two group sessions, participants are invited to complete an assignment designed to help put Andre’s ideas into practice. Whether you are photographing for social media, personal projects, or creative exploration, this program broadens how you think about the camera you carry every day. By the end of the course, you see your iPhone not as a limitation, but as a flexible tool for creating thoughtful portraits anytime, anywhere.
For the best experience in this workshop, participants should have an iPhone 12 or later model for access to RAW files and other capabilities. Participants should plan to download the Lightroom app to their iPhone prior to the start of the workshop.
Class will meet 6:00 – 8:00 pm (Mountain Time) on Wednesday, June 17, and Wednesday, June 24 (two online group sessions).
Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.
Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less-than-ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.

From photographing The North Face’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge expedition to production stills on the set of W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades of America (CNN Original Series), Aundre captures authentic moments in unlikely places. The images have to look right, but more than that, they have to feel right. His ability to connect deeply with others, and do what it takes to get the shot, has resulted in work that’s been featured in The New York Times, Wired, AdWeek, and Chicago Reader, among others. Aundre has partnered with brands such as Apple, Adidas, Google, Chase Sapphire, and Adobe.
