Course Description

An engaging visual edit not only sets a tone and drives a narrative, it also has the power to elevate a body of work. Photographers and photo editors alike are often daunted by the prospect of narrowing down, sequencing, and pacing a large volume of images, but these steps are essential for creating photographic projects that tell succinct stories.

A well-balanced edit should convey a point concisely while maintaining clear rhythm and logic. How do you craft an edit that succeeds on all these fronts? The most important element is a strong sequence, and during this two-day, in-person intensive workshop, photo editor Amanda Webster helps you identify strengths and patterns within a visual story.

With the help of hands-on exercises, she collaborates with participants to edit existing bodies of work for platforms both print and digital. Drawing from her experience at The Wall Street Journal Magazine and The New York Times, Amanda also provides practical guidance for developing and pitching project ideas, as well as promoting your work.

Whether you’re a photographer intent on strengthening your portfolio or a photo editor aiming to sharpen your critical instincts, you come away with the tools and skills to produce an eloquent narrative—not to mention a more finely tuned understanding of your own editing philosophy.
