Course Description

The handmade, self-published books known as photo zines provide an astounding opportunity for creative expression through a democratized platform. Because they are easy and inexpensive to create and distribute, zines can serve as promotional pieces for exhibitions, calling cards to send to curators, or products sold via subscription or in bookstores.

This four-hour program with Jeff Phillips helps creators at all levels of experience gain a thorough understanding of the photo zine making process, from concept to completion. We begin our exploration with a fun and fast-paced tour of the expansive photo zine universe, perusing the freshest new zines created by established and emerging contemporary photographic artists.

Every participant receives access to a free comprehensive resources guide, and through examples and hands-on experience, you learn the fundamentals of design and construction, such as material selection and options for folding and binding. We experiment with approaches to layout and production, including common software (and how to create zines using no software at all). Finally, we compare publishing options for your zine, from home printers to commercial services.

Whether you want to raise awareness about your practice, reenergize a stalled project, or test the waters for a photo book, this workshop builds your competence and confidence about making zines. Discover how easy it can to get your work out into the world!
