Course Description

As a photographer, you already have many of the skills necessary to make a short film: familiarity with composition, lighting, and digital-imaging technology. You also own a portable, easy to use, high-quality video-making camera with exceptional built-in image stabilization: your smart phone.

Full-time professional videographer David Wells guides you through your transition from photographer to filmmaker, as you create a dramatic and visually compelling short film. The subject can be any topic of interest—from travel to family to work—and we construct our visual stories simply by recording video and audio on our smart phones and editing the footage together.

Before and during the workshop, participants watch a series of videos on various aspects of filmmaking, and throughout our time together, we explore how to use the tools we already have to tell a story through movement, the unfolding of time, and especially the power of sound. As your short film evolves, we engage in real-time instruction, discussions of pre-recorded lessons, and one-on-one conversations as needed.

From inception to capture and from organization to final output, David lays bare and demystifies the filmmaking process. You come away with a set of new skills and a renewed appreciation for the ones you already possess.
