Course Description

If your flower photographs are less than spectacular, this is the workshop for you! Join fine-art photographer Kathleen Clemons as she leads you through a plethora of techniques for creating less literal, more imaginative flower photographs. Kathleen covers every aspect of making stunning portraits of blooms and blossoms, including:

  • Flower photography equipment
  • Choosing the right subject
  • Isolating and simplifying your compositions
  • Controlling natural light
  • Working around less-than-desirable lighting
  • Seeing beyond the obvious
  • Using selective and critical focus
  • Dealing with backgrounds
  • Embracing the joys of bokeh and blur
  • Working with a Lensbaby
  • Post-processing techniques, including textured backgrounds

Each day includes a presentation, group critiques of assignments, and photographing out in the field, where you benefit from hands-on instruction from Kathleen. Throughout, we discover how in-camera and post-processing techniques can be strategically applied to create more artistic imagery.

As you begin to perceive flowers in new and exciting ways, your own method of seeing evolves, making you a more careful—and more compelling—photographer. The camera looks both ways; why not put more of yourself in your floral images?
