Course Description

Photographing portraits on assignment is an exciting endeavor that can lend itself to many challenges. A range of technical and interpersonal skills are necessary to transform an artistic vision into reality, and over the course of four days in May, Sebastian Kim imparts all the tools participants need to become versatile portrait photographers.

Sebastian shares his approach to communicating with portrait subjects, offering tips and techniques for building trust and creating a safe and enjoyable photographic experience. He also details the different lighting techniques he uses, both in the studio and in natural environments, to bring the inner life of a subject to the surface. He examines the dynamics of working with a publication, from pitching ideas to collaborating with a team of creative directors, stylists, hair, make up and prop stylists to bring the vision together. Sebastian also discusses the business side of being an editorial and advertising photographer and reviews some of the key factors to fostering relationships with magazines and clients.

Based in Brooklyn at Robert Clark’s Ten Ton Studio on Thursday and Friday and in Sebastian’s studio on Saturday and Sunday, this hands-on workshop offers daily assignments and critiques of the resulting images by Sebastian. His input and feedback lead to insights and growth for each workshop participant.

You finish our time together with the inspiration and concrete skills to further your career as an editorial portrait photographer. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to work with one of today’s leading portrait masters.
