Course Description

Armed with an iPhone and your sense of play and spontaneity, join Karen Divine to move outside your comfort zone and make visual illustrations that comprise the foundation of who you are as well as that which makes you totally unique as creative individuals. The fabric of all our experiences exists in our imagery — the shadows, dreams, joys, doubts, and fears and, given the tools, these qualities will appear in your work. Art is an amazing tool for self-discovery.

Karen’s unique process, crafted through photographs and illustration, brings to life a world of color, symbolism, revelations, and a place where surprises unfold. She says, “my pieces begin with images of textures, gentle marks, colors that move me in the moment as well as forms from other images. I soften these experiences altogether and create a playground for my imagination to continue. On occasion, a background might hold the entire weight of the story. Most of the time a background is just a beginning, a resolve of the days mood and an opportunity to jump into the creative rabbit hole. It can be place of salvation, peace, retreat, sometimes frustration and often utter joy.”

In this four-session online workshop, Karen focuses on how to allow the creative process to drive the outcome rather than the outcome driving the process. It’s about learning to allow the image to unfold and being playful.  It’s about learning what imagery you love and the kind of photographs you want to emulate in your own unique way. The workshop is an instructional and philosophical approach to the creative process.

Karen does a brief review of Superimpose X, Procreate, and Snapseed. Participants need to be proficient in at least one of these layering apps, or they may use Adobe Photoshop for compositing. Each group session is filled with demos, inspiration, image reviews, encouragement, and assignments for the next class.

The primary goal of this workshop is to learn to follow a creative intuitive process that reveals your personal experiences of the world and yourself.
