Embark on an enriching photographic journey with Roxanne Bouché Overton on the storied coast of Maine. Our immersive workshop focuses on mastering the art of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), with additional segments dedicated to exploring the intricacies of multiple exposure and compositing techniques. The workshop seamlessly blends classroom instruction, hands-on field sessions, and artistic exploration, allowing participants to delve into new and expanded photography skills while enjoying the magical backdrop of Maine’s shoreline.
We kick off with engaging classroom sessions to explore the fundamental principles of ICM photography. These sessions provide a solid foundation for understanding the techniques involved in capturing dynamic and abstract images through camera movement. We master the handheld basics of movement and long exposure before moving to more advanced skills and techniques. Each class includes demonstrations, showcasing techniques tailored for your next assignment. This time is not only informative but also fosters a collaborative learning environment, allowing the sharing of insights and ideas.
Following these classroom sessions, we journey along the coast’s forests, beaches, islands, and villages. Daily photography field trips provide the perfect opportunity to apply new ICM techniques in real-world settings. Maine’s vibrant colors, architectural wonders, seascapes, coastal villages and landscapes serve as an endless source of inspiration for creative expression. Late September offers a perfect timeframe for this four-and-a-half-day workshop as the days are sunny and warm, and the busy summer tourist season has ended.
Each day, we build further upon the fundamentals, experimenting with more advanced camera movements, multiple exposures, and abstract effects within a single frame. We also study and explore the interplay of subject motion and camera movement, examining how both can influence the final image.
The technical aspects of post-processing are not neglected, as the workshop includes daily in-depth Photoshop demonstrations tailored for refining and enhancing ICM and ME images. You learn to elevate your work through digital manipulation and compositing, adding additional layers of creativity to your artistic repertoire. Roxanne works extensively with NIK filters and encourages everyone to have the software installed on their laptop. Further details about this will be included in her letter.
To ensure personal growth and development, the workshop also incorporates critique sessions where participants receive constructive feedback on their assignments. This dialogue encourages artistic exploration and the honing of individual styles, fostering a supportive community of like-minded photographers.
The dramatic Maine coastline from Portland through Harpswell to Popham is our playground during this workshop. The small village of Freeport is our base of operations for the week. Rick Berk, a landscape photographer and longtime Maine resident, is in charge of logistics and provides technical support for all cameras, lenses, and software concerns.
