Photography can be more than documentation—it can be transformation. In this new online workshop with photographer, writer, and educator André Gallant, you move beyond the literal to explore a more poetic, expressive way of seeing and creating. Over six group sessions, André shares a range of techniques—both in-camera and in Photoshop—that have shaped his work for over 25 years and continues to open new doors in his own creative practice.
Drawing from the approaches André has written about in his book, Dreamscapes, Expressionism, Inspiration, and Innovation, together you explore compositional montages, dreamlike Orton imagery, intentional camera movement (ICM), mirror montages, and in-camera multiple exposures. These techniques aren’t about following rules or formulas—they’re tools for discovering your own creative language. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with them. They allow you to move past what’s in front of the lens and into something more personal, interpretive, and deeply your own.
Each group session introduces one technique in a clear and approachable way. André shares images that illustrate how he uses the process and offers live demonstrations, especially when it comes to combining images using layers and blending modes in Photoshop. Between sessions, you have time to photograph and explore the techniques in your own way. We then come back together to review these images, offer thoughtful feedback, and encourage each other’s growth.
This is plenty of space for experimentation, for asking what if?, for letting go of expectations and seeing where the camera—and your intuition—might lead. Whether you’re new to these techniques or returning to them with fresh eyes, this workshop invites you to trust your vision and give shape to the images only you can create.
Working knowledge of digital workflow and manual mode on your SLR or mirrorless camera. Basic ICM skills and familiarity with Photoshop are also helpful.
Class will meet 12:30 – 2:30 pm (Mountain Time) on Mondays and Thursdays starting November 3 and ending November 20 (six online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.
Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.
Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less than ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.
André Gallant is a photographer, writer, and educator whose work explores the emotional and expressive power of the image. He is the author of many acclaimed photography books, including Expressionism, Inspiration, and Innovation, and has spent decades guiding others to see not just with their eyes, but with their hearts. More recently, André has begun pairing his photographs with personal writing—an extension of his belief that art is at its most powerful when it reflects the inner life. In his workshops, he encourages a creative process where vision is personal, intuition leads, and there are no limits to what one can express.
