October 6 – 10, 2024

Location: Bar Harbor, Maine

Course Description

Acadia National Park is arguably the crown jewel of the northeast when it comes to natural beauty, and autumn is when it visually comes alive with color! The air turns cool, coastal fog adds an air of mystery on crisp mornings, and the trees come alive with vibrant fall colors. The unique beauty of Acadia and Mount Desert Island is a landscape photographer’s paradise, beckoning them from far and wide to capture the essence of autumn on the Maine coast. Rick Berk, an accomplished photographer and skillful workshop leader, brings his years of experience photographing this stunning part of the rocky coastline.

We begin our journey on Sunday afternoon with introductions, a review of each participant’s photographs, the week’s agenda, and image presentations from Rick. The week is highlighted by an exploration of Acadia, including well-known locations as well as those off the beaten path. There are daily image reviews and presentations from Rick designed to inspire and elevate your photography, while we immerse ourselves in Down East Maine’s unique landscape. Our locations include the most well-known sites including Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole, as well as the less traveled carriage roads, waterfalls, stone bridges, and marshes. And there is the opportunity to photograph under the stars, weather permitting.

During our five days together, we focus on both the creative and technical elements of landscape photography. One goal is to expand our creativity and understand how to envision the scenes before us and then create photographs that effectively capture the locale and communicate the emotions within. On the technical side, Rick explains the features of your camera designed to allow maximum creativity in your photography, including autofocus, long exposure, multiple exposure, and HDR. You learn how to effectively manage your exposure settings to go beyond the proper illumination of a scene, but also how to adjust settings for creative effect. Rick also discusses techniques for creating dynamic compositions, and how to see the scene before you to break it down and create inspiring images.

Our classroom and suggested, comfortable accommodations are at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Event Center. Located on 12 acres of oceanfront property, just one mile from Acadia National Park and the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Bar Harbor, the hotel contains six different buildings, and no matter which building you choose, you enjoy a front-row view of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Alternate accommodations are available across the street at their sister properties, the Acadia Inn and the Bar Harbor Motel.

Join Maine photographer, Rick Berk, for a photographic adventure to one of the country’s most iconic landscape destinations during peak fall color.
