Dynamic South Korea: From Seoul to Jeju

South Korea is a country of striking contrasts, where centuries-old traditions exist alongside cutting-edge modernity, bustling cities give way to quiet mountain villages, and dramatic coastlines frame a culture deeply connected to history, food, and community. For photographers, South Korea offers an extraordinary range of visual experiences, from royal palaces and traditional hanok neighborhoods to vibrant markets, fishing harbors, the renowned women free-divers of Jeju Island, volcanic landscapes, and the energy of a modern society humming with possibility. Timed for autumn, when the air is crisp and the light is soft and clear, this international trip explores a dynamic country shaped by seas and stone through a rich photographic journey led by Jennifer Spelman.

Our adventure begins in Seoul, a dynamic capital where ancient palace walls stand in the shadow of modern skyscrapers. Here we photograph the grandeur of royal architecture, traditional hanbok culture, historic neighborhoods, colorful street scenes, and the rhythms of daily life that make Seoul one of Asia’s most fascinating cities. From quiet temple courtyards and winding alleyways to lively markets and creative districts, Seoul offers endless opportunities for storytelling through photography.

Traveling south, we experience a different side of Korea in Andong and Gyeongju, two cities deeply connected to the country’s cultural heritage. Traditional villages, Confucian traditions, historic architecture, and centuries-old customs provide a window into Korea’s past. Encounters with local residents, traditional performances, and everyday cultural life provide meaningful opportunities to photograph the people, traditions, and details that define this region.

Moving to Busan, Korea’s vibrant coastal city, the focus shifts toward colorful urban landscapes, bustling seafood markets, working harbors, and life along the sea. Hillside neighborhoods, lively streets, fishing culture, and dramatic coastal temples create a visually rich environment that reflects the character and energy of Korea’s southern coast. A day exploring the fishing communities and coastal scenery of Tongyeong expands our understanding of life along Korea’s southern shoreline.

The final chapter of our journey takes us to Jeju Island, a volcanic landscape unlike anywhere else on the Korean peninsula. Here we photograph sweeping coastal vistas, volcanic formations, rolling grasslands, farming communities, and the island’s unique cultural traditions. Sunrise over the sea, dramatic shorelines, and encounters with the legendary haenyeo women divers provide powerful photographic subjects and a deeper appreciation for Jeju’s distinct identity.

As this 10-day journey unfolds day by day, Jennifer guides you through a wide range of photographic opportunities, from portraiture and street photography to landscapes, architecture, and visual storytelling. Daily discussions, individual image reviews, and hands-on instruction help you strengthen both technical skills and creative vision while developing a personal response to the places and people we encounter.
