Course Description

Flat lay is a unique practice in photography, where the creator is invited to work with a perspective unusual to the human eye, more akin to that of a bird in flight. In this form of still life photography, gravity plays an essential role in holding each object in place. Similar to painting, the photographer is in full control of every aspect of the frame. In flat lay photography, there is no decisive moment to capture. The mission is to organize objects in space to create a dynamic composition, bringing life to the inanimate. 

This fun and accessible online workshop is led by Charles Sammann, a photographer and set designer based in Brooklyn, NY. Charles approaches his still life work with a designer’s eye and a storyteller’s sensibility, finding graphic beauty in the overlooked and ordinary. Whether arranging tools, fruit, or fragments of daily life, he treats each object as both subject and character, building images that feel fresh, balanced, and full of energy. His practice extends beyond photography into set design and prop styling, but at its core is always the same pursuit: uncovering unexpected connections between objects and transforming them into striking visual compositions.

Over four sessions, you are guided through a series of lectures, live demonstrations, and assignments that help you develop the ability to look at everyday objects for their graphic qualities, shapes, colors, and textures. You explore and experiment with the fundamentals of light, composition, and form. Objects become props, surfaces become backgrounds, coming together to create dynamic, graphic imagery. By the end of the workshop, you gain confidence in arranging and photographing objects from your own perspective, creating images that reflect your unique vision and creative voice.

What You Should Know:

All cameras are welcome, from mirrorless to the iPhone. 

You can work with any light source: strobes, window light, or even your phone’s flash.

Participants must be able to select and organize images using image editing software for class sessions.

Special Notes:

Class will meet 9:30 – 11:30 am (Mountain Time) on Saturdays starting March 7 and ending March 28 (four online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.

Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.

Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less than ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.

Charles Sammann

Charles Sammann is a photographer and set designer based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City. He graduated from the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University with a degree in photography. After school, he moved to Santa Fe, where he became the studio manager at the Santa Fe Workshops, later becoming one of the founding members of their Cuban Cultural Exchange Photo program in Havana, where he developed a love for documentary photography. Splitting his time between Havana and Santa Fe, Charles started shooting still life photography for Outside Magazine, where he discovered a strong connection with creating graphic imagery from still objects, particularly flat lay photography. 

Since moving to New York City, Charles continues to photograph things that don’t move but has expanded his practice to portraiture, set design, and prop styling. He works both in the editorial and commercial world with clients ranging from Outside Magazine, Gay Letter Magazine, Milk-Bone, Apple, and Indeed. Charles is a runner, dancer, an avid fermenter, and a hopeless romantic.
