Course Description

Expressing a unique vision is the holy grail for all artists, and this introductory workshop with photographic artist and filmmaker Maria Finitzo explores two creative tools that can help photographers find their individual style: intentional camera movement (ICM) and in-camera multiple exposure (ME).

Our time together is divided between lectures covering the basic technical aspects of both approaches and group sessions where Maria shares feedback on weekly assignments. She also introduces you to the work of photographers who use ME and ICM in idiosyncratic and daring ways.

Photographing in manual mode allows us more freedom to delve into various camera settings. Because ICM is an abstract style that essentially consists of moving a lens during a long exposure, we explore not only shutter speeds but types of motion: panning, tilting, zoom bursts, circular and diagonal, smooth and jerky, push and pull.

Participants learn how different elements—manipulation of color, light, shadow, texture, and shape, as well as blend modes, white-balance shifts, and exposure—can add distinction to their images.

There are no wrong ways to experiment with ME and ICM, and the results are wonderfully unpredictable and creatively surprising. As you gain the photographic tools and insights to capture the visual world in a new manner, you also nurture the beginnings of a unique artistic vision.
