Course Description

The photograph as a visual tool is changing at warp speed, and the process of working with multiple images can yield surprising and challenging results. New meanings emerge when images are grouped together: a narrative unfolds, visual diary begins to develop, a catalog or taxonomy takes shape.

Fine-art photographer David Hilliard’s large-scale, multi-paneled color photographs present complex narratives exploring a range of situations, from moments of contemplation to scenes of heightened drama. He manipulates the personal and familiar to provide a commentary on larger issues, striking a balance between autobiography and fiction.

Under David’s guidance, workshop participants investigate the idea of the photograph as a single moment as we experiment with rearranging and re-contextualizing images. Through readings, assignments, exercises, and presentations of work by artists (contemporary and historic), we learn about editing and sequencing photographs. Group portfolio reviews and discussions help us define our intentions, practices, and technical choices. We also discuss the writing of artist statements and explore conceptual installations.

As we document our life and the lives of those around us, we create work with a number of images employing slightly different focal points, offering multiple perspectives of a single scene. By exploring this new skill, you discover that time and space are yours to invent and reinvent, again and again.
