Course Description

Photography is a captivating medium in itself, but by incorporating it with other materials, we can open our minds and spark new ideas. In this workshop, Holly Roberts invites you to engage in exploration, investigation, and risk, as you combine—and recombine—disparate media: photographs, paint, text, and any other material you want to use.

We begin by experimenting with different ways of applying paint, and those painted surfaces that result become the core of the work to follow, guiding you towards your final image. Although photography is an important part of our process, it is only one of many components that contribute to the building of a successful image.

We also experiment with different transfer techniques—pigment, laser, contact paper, and polymer, to name a few—exploring the fine art of gluing and adhering. While using your own source material isn’t mandatory, it does help you connect your creative processes to the project.

Holly leads discussions and critiques (both group and individual) that improve our editing skills and hone our visual literacy. Throughout, participants are encouraged to contribute ideas and share techniques.

Spend five days pushing your aesthetic boundaries as you immerse yourself in the genre-bending world of mixed-media.
