Course Description
Glenn Randall’s approach to teaching landscape photography can be summed up in eight words: master the craft, and the art will follow.
The craft of landscape photography goes far beyond understanding photography basics like aperture and shutter speed. It includes the ability to use topographic maps and computerized mapping tools to plan your photographs and to locate promising subjects in the field. It also includes concepts from geography, which tells us how the angle of sunrise and sunset varies throughout the year, and a working knowledge of atmospheric optics—the science of how sunlight interacts with our atmosphere.
Most crucially, the craft of landscape photography includes understanding how the complexities of human vision affect the way we see the world and the way we view art. Understanding how our visual system processes high-contrast scenes helps participants produce beautiful and true-to-life renditions of those scenes.
We spend mornings in the classroom in the digital lab. Afternoons are spent practicing our newly acquired skills at scenic locations in and around the richly inspiring environs of Santa Fe. Participants not only receive the solid foundation in craft they need to flourish as artists, but also have the opportunity for a one-on-one portfolio review. As participants increase their mastery of the craft, their artistry grows and their ability to produce creative yet realistic landscape photographs is enhanced.
A good landscape photographer has the brain of an engineer and the heart of a hopeless romantic. This workshop helps you develop both halves of your photographic personality.

What You Should Know:
Working knowledge of digital workflow and manual mode on your digital SLR or mirrorless camera. Participants must be able to download, select, and transfer images to their own jump drive for class each day.
For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for one month after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after one month to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.

Glenn Randall has been a full-time photographer, writer, and instructor for 43 years. He is a contributing editor for Outdoor Photographer magazine and in the course of his career over 2,000 of his photographs have been published, including 88 covers. He has also sold over 10,000 prints.
Three books of his landscape photographs have been published, Colorado Wild and Beautiful, Rocky Mountain National Park Impressions, and Sunrise from the Summit, which showcases images Glenn captured at sunrise from the summit of all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks. His first textbook, The Art, Science, and Craft of Great Landscape Photography, was published in 2015; the second edition was published in June, 2020. His second textbook, Dusk to Dawn: A Guide to Landscape Photography at Night, was published in spring 2018.
