Cali M. Banks is a lens-based artist based in Grand Rapids, MI. Working through experimental photography and filmmaking, her practice reclaims identity using auto-ethnographic approaches to explore personal and collective histories, intimacy, and expanded definitions of Indigenous art. She is interested in image-making as a record-keeping tool that can be manipulated to recreate memory, history, and healing.

Cali is a Visiting Professor of Photography at Grand Valley State University. She holds an MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder and a BA from Allegheny College. Cali has served on the faculty at Syracuse University, Indiana University, Pratt Institute’s Munson Campus, and the University of Colorado Boulder. She also teaches through Penumbra Foundation. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Art Basel Miami and the Everson Museum of Art, and published in Nueva Luz, The Hand Magazine, Der Greif, and Rolling Stone France. She is a 2024 En Foco Fellow, a 2024 resident at Penumbra Foundation, a 2025 resident at Aurora PhotoCenter, and recently received the JGS Fellowship in Photography supported by the New York Foundation for the Arts.
