Double your fun in creative image making with fine-art photographer Manuela Thames’ newest workshop creation that focuses on techniques to bring dreamlike, surreal, and otherworldly qualities to your photography. Double exposure is a technique involving the combination or superimposition of two or more images on top of one another. It is an imaginative way to add depth, layers, and storytelling elements to your photographs. Diptychs are a set of two images you either put side-by-side or above one another to, once again, tell a story.
Manuela begins this six-session online workshop by reviewing the techniques necessary to create double exposures and diptychs using in-camera means as well as with Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop. The results and possibilities of both techniques are endless. Participants practice these techniques through various assignments throughout the workshop.
As the techniques of creating double exposures and diptychs become more intuitive, Manuela expands the workshop to include the creative vision components. The goal of this journey is to develop your vision for combining photographs and your understanding of the process of choosing the right images whether you are creating in camera or in Photoshop. This workshop is for photographers of all genres including portraits, figure work, landscapes, street photography, self-portraiture, or still-life photography.
In addition to photographic assignments and group image reviews led by Manuela, she also initiates discussions on creative vision, the creative process and practice, where to get inspiration and new ideas, and the question of originality in the art-making process. This unique workshop is an intriguing photographic exploration into the duality in life that sometimes divides us but always brings us closer to an understanding of the complexities of life.
Working knowledge of digital workflow and manual mode on your digital SLR or mirrorless camera. Participants must be able to download and select images using image editing software for class sessions. A proficiency in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop is required for this workshop.
Class will meet 9:30 – 11:30 am (Mountain Time) on Tuesdays and Fridays starting August 30 and ending September 16 (six online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.

Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less than ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.

For the convenience of participants, recordings of each class session are posted privately for two weeks after the end of each session. Santa Fe Workshops takes the recordings down after two weeks to protect the intellectual property of our instructors.
Manuela Thames is a fine-art photographer residing in Saint Paul, Minnesota with her family. Born and raised in Germany, she moved to the US in 2004 and shortly thereafter began her journey with photography.
Her fine artwork consists largely of black and white, conceptual self-portraits as she aims to explore the brokenness of humanity, the struggles of loss and grief and her personal experiences with generational trauma. Within that she continues to explore human ways of coping, the strength that evolves out of suffering and our common desire for healing and journeys toward wholeness.
Her photography has been described as contemplative, evocative, dark and cinematic and has been widely exhibited nationally as well as internationally.
Her “Trauma” series won 1st place conceptual series of the year in the Monovisions Award in 2019 and in the same year she won the 13th Julia Margaret Cameron Award in the Self Portrait Category. In addition, her work has been published online and in print in such places as Black and White Magazine, Sun Magazine and Shots Magazine.
