COVID-19 Update: For all in-person workshops and trips in 2022, Santa Fe Workshops requires that all participants attending be fully vaccinated (per definition of the CDC) and provide proof of vaccination. This requirement applies to students, staff, and instructors.

Course Description

Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, and rising above them are the spectacular 14,000-foot peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, at the foothills of the Rockies. These elements converge to create one of the state’s best dark-sky locations.

We begin each morning in the classroom, where Glenn, a contributing editor at Outdoor Photographer, covers essential information for both day and night photography, such as how to shoot in high-contrast light and how to use apps, including Sun Surveyor and The Photographer’s Ephemeris. Glenn also shares best practices for planning, photographing, and processing both single-frame and panoramic images of the Milky Way. Afternoons are spent in the field photographing the dunes illuminated by the San Luis Valley’s sunset light, and our sessions continue after dark, when we capture the seemingly infinite array of stars soaring over this surreal landscape.

After three days in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, we drive three hours to Santa Fe and spend our final two days editing and printing our best photographs in The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab. Throughout, Glenn provides continual feedback on participants’ work. Join him for a thorough introduction to creating stunning daytime and nighttime images in one of the West's most beautiful national parks.

Additional Information

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Advanced Amateurs
What You Should Know:

Working knowledge of digital workflow and manual mode on your digital SLR or mirrorless camera. Participants must be able to download, select, and transfer images to their own jump drive for class each day.

Special Notes:

Please note that one of the locations where students will shoot the Milky Way is 0.6 miles from the parking lot. This hike is largely flat, but the route is sandy, the hike will take place at night, and the hike does involve a few short climbs up and down small sand dunes. A basic level of fitness and willingness to hike in the dark by headlamp is required. In addition, students will have the opportunity to hike in daylight to the summit of High Dune. This optional hike is about 1.5 miles one-way and involves 700 feet of elevation gain in deep sand. There is no obligation to complete the hike, and there are many excellent photographic opportunities along the way.

For the first four nights, it is suggested that participants stay at Holiday Inn Express in Alamosa. To reserve a room using the group rate for participants, please email Sara Ratzlaff (hiexalamosafom@gmail.com) before July 30; no calls please. We expect that the classroom sessions will also be held at the hotel. While in Santa Fe, participants are responsible for making their own housing arrangements in Santa Fe. On-campus accommodations are not currently available.

Computer workstations are provided in the digital lab. View Payment, Refund, Withdrawal, and Transfer Policies for Summer 2021 workshops.
