Making consistently great portraits for magazines and clients takes “on demand” creativity, confidence in your techniques and strong communication skills. From initial client contact to developing a concept to essential production decisions, Jeff shares his technical skills and offers real-life advice about situations that can arise when photographing people, for people (aka clients).
During this five-day workshop in the beautiful colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, you learn how to read and shape natural light, which is Jeff’s favorite to work with. Time is dedicated to reviewing how to interact not only with your clients but with your subject, be they a celebrity or a “real” person. Jeff leads us through the typical daylight studio shoot on our campus, and also takes us out on location three afternoons in and around San Manuel to perfect the use natural light modifiers. Daily assignments focus on creating beautiful photographs for magazine covers, editorial spreads and portrait stories. Jeff reviews the images created for these assignments the following day.
Time is devoted to discussing the emotional and political delicacies often required for this particular line of work. Jeff freely dispenses tips on “the rest of the job,” including scouting locations, collaborating with and directing a photographic team (assistants, hair and makeup, and digital techs), the process of self-promotion (directed toward magazine clients), and how to look for an agent.
Join Jeff and learn the skills needed to draw the best out of your subjects, keep your clients happy, and keep you employed – all against the stunning backdrop of one of the world great cities, San Miguel de Allende, in the central highlands of Mexico.
