Course Description

Infrared photography offers the artistic photographer a path to creating a world of visual magic. However, it’s important to learn the rules of infrared, so you can go out and break them. Over five comprehensive days, renowned infrared specialist, Laurie Klein, and her longtime teaching partner, Shelley Vandegrift, show you how to do just that.

Under Laurie’s guidance, participants train their eyes to pre-visualize the qualities of infrared: how it records heat and how it interprets the visible spectrum, especially regarding foliage, vegetation, people, clothing, buildings, and lighting situations. In daily field sessions, students explore the unique art of emotive storytelling through the unique beauty of infrared as we photograph nature, landscapes, structures, and models.

In The Workshops state-of-the-art Digital Lab, Shelley discusses technical concepts specific to infrared such as white balance, camera considerations, and post-processing requirements and techniques. She guides each student during the week in developing a personalized workflow that suits their artistic goals.

Each day we engage in group image review as well as one-on-one time with Laurie, who facilitates your process of finding and strengthening your own infrared visual voice. At the end of the week, we print selected infrared images created during our time together.

This workshop is open to those just entering the world of infrared as well as anyone wishing to improve their technique and create more dramatic infrared photographs. Come with an open, curious mind, ready to learn the secrets of great infrared photography, and leave with a new set of skills for making unforgettable images!

Laurie’s work embodies a soft, passionate style that most often depicts the human experience in nature. She began photographing with infrared film under the tutelage of Ansel Adams when she was a young woman and has never looked back.

She has been teaching for more than 30 years, and her work has appeared in hundreds of publications and numerous gallery exhibitions She is author of two infrared photography books published by Amherst Media: Photographing the Female Form with Digital Infrared and Infrared Photography and Artistic Techniques for Brilliant Images, co-authored with her son Kyle Klein and Shelley Vandegrift. about
Shelley Vandegrift

Shelley Vandegrift fell in love with photography as a child working with her father in their at-home darkroom. From that early time, the technical components of the post-production process held as much attraction for her as the creative experience behind the lens. Shelley considers the image her canvas and the computer her brush and palette.

Following a successful career as a senior executive at several major corporations, Shelley brings her knowledge of computer systems and processes to her teaching partnership with her artistic mentor and friend, Laurie Klein. Together, they guide other photographers to achieve their own artistic vision through the magic of post-processing.

Shelley is co-author with Laurie Klein of Infrared Photography: Digital Techniques for Artistic Images, 2nd Edition from Amherst Publishing. Her work has been featured in B&W Magazine and has appeared in A. Smith Gallery, Lucas Gallery, and the Art Travelers Gallery at Dallas’s Love Field airport.
