Course Description

Are you a photographer who wants to explore and traverse the width and breath of creating a handmade artist book? Have you always wanted to showcase your images in a unique way and learn a new craft in doing so? Join photographer and bookmaker Travis Hocutt for this online workshop that provides an introduction to artist bookmaking and binding techniques.

Through two group sessions led by Travis on consecutive Saturdays (each four hours in length), coupled with self-directed activities between these sessions, you develop a personal book project. while learning a variety of binding techniques including; Japanese stab binding, accordion, single and multi-section, and Coptic. As part of each class session, Travis shows examples of and talks about other handmade bookmaking artists that are working with these binding techniques. Papers, threads, and other bookbinding tools are discussed to expand your creative vision and bookmaking opportunities.

Class sessions include demonstrations by Travis, presentations of student projects as inspiration for your own bookmaking, as well as opportunities for troubleshooting. Time in-between these group sessions allow you a chance to practice these binding techniques and assemble a personal book project. During troubleshooting sessions, Travis helps you solve issues you have encountered when trying out the different binding techniques. Your first book project focuses on learning one binding technique, sometimes with blank materials, so that later a more polished book of your images can be made as you further develop a distinctive handmade artist book.
