Course Description

With infrared photography, it’s important to learn the rules so you can go out and break them, and over five comprehensive days, renowned IR specialist Laurie Klein shows you how to do just that. Under her guidance, participants train their eyes to pre-visualize the qualities of IR: how it records heat and how it interprets the visible spectrum, especially regarding foliage, vegetation, people, clothing, buildings, and lighting situations.

In daily outdoor visits to the field, we photograph nature, landscapes, structures, and models while exploring the art of emotive storytelling. On the more technical side, we discuss white balance and the camera settings necessary for strong capture. Shelley Vandegrift, Laurie’s longtime collaborator, provides technical information for capture as well as helping each student develop a personalized workflow incorporating numerous post-production techniques.

Each day we engage in group critiques as well as one-on-one time with Laurie, who facilitates your process of finding and strengthening your own infrared visual voice. Throughout, each participant develops a personalized workflow and gets comfortable utilizing different post-production methods. At the end of the week, we print selected IR images produced during the workshop our images in the Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab.

This workshop is open to those just entering the world of infrared as well as anyone wishing to up their game and create more dramatic IR photographs. Please bring a converted IR camera.

Come with an open, curious mind, ready to learn the secrets of great infrared photography, and leave with a new set of skills for making unforgettable images!

Laurie has been teaching for more than 30 years, and her work has appeared in hundreds of publications and numerous gallery exhibitions She is author of two infrared photography books published by Amherst Media: Photographing the Female Form with Digital Infrared and Infrared Photography and Artistic Techniques for Brilliant Images, co-authored with her son Kyle Klein and Shelley Vandegrift. about
Shelley Vandegrift

Shelley Vandegrift fell under the spell of photography as a 10-year-old child, carefully watching and learning in her father’s darkroom. From that point forward, the technical components of the post-production process held as much attraction for her as the creative experience behind the lens. With the introduction of digital photography, she found a marriage between her two passions: photography and computer technology. She shares that passion both in her photographic art and in workshops and webinars globally.

Her teaching focuses primarily on two areas: artistic post-processing techniques and infrared photography. Shelley possesses a knack for taking post-processing techniques and making them accessible to all. In conjunction with her artistic mentor and friend, Laurie Klein, she guides photographers in achieving their own artistic vision through the magic of post-processing and discovering the skills they need to craft their stories.

Shelley is co-author with Laurie Klein of Infrared Photography: Digital Techniques for Artistic Images, 2nd Edition from Amherst Publishing. She is the designer and developer of Infrared Mastery presets for Luminar and Lightroom, and has been a guest lecturer/presenter for Skylum and DxO software.  Her work has been featured in the two-woman exhibit, The Beauty of Invisible Light, at the Commons Gallery and in B&W Magazine, A. Smith Gallery, the Latino Cultural Center of Dallas, Dallas City Hall, Lucas Gallery, and the Art Travelers Gallery at Dallas’s Love Field airport.
